GENERAL OBD-II CODE GUIDE
P0455Evaporative emissions system leak detected, large leak
A large-leak or loss-of-seal monitor result that still needs a vehicle-specific check.
WHAT IT GENERALLY REPORTS
A starting point, not a parts list.
The evaporative-emissions monitor detected a large leak or could not maintain the expected seal during its test. It points to a system-level result, not the leak’s physical location.
Common symptoms
- The check-engine light may be the only noticeable symptom.
- A fuel-vapor odor can occur, especially around a leak, but its absence does not rule one out.
- The vehicle may otherwise drive normally.
Possible causes
- A missing or poorly seated removable fuel cap on vehicles that use one.
- A larger opening, disconnected section, or sealing fault in the evaporative-emissions system.
- A valve or system-control problem that requires testing to tell apart from a leak.
Safe initial checks
- If equipped with a removable fuel cap, check that it is present and appears seated; do not force or modify it.
- Note fuel odor, the timing of the warning, and any other codes; preserve scan data before clearing anything.
- For a strong fuel odor or visible fuel leak, keep away from ignition sources and get help rather than continuing to drive.
When to get professional help
- A recurring code needs a vehicle-specific evaporative-system inspection to find the source.
- Do not disconnect vapor lines or use improvised leak tests; the correct method depends on the vehicle and its service information.
