GENERAL OBD-II CODE GUIDE
P0301Cylinder 1 misfire detected
Understand the monitor result without guessing where cylinder 1 sits on your engine.
WHAT IT GENERALLY REPORTS
A starting point, not a parts list.
The engine computer detected misfire activity associated with the cylinder identified as number 1 by that vehicle’s engine configuration. The code alone does not say why the misfire occurred, and cylinder numbering is not universal.
Common symptoms
- The engine may idle unevenly, shake, hesitate, or have reduced power.
- The check-engine light may stay on or flash when the misfire is active.
- A driver may notice no clear symptom even when the code is stored.
Possible causes
- An ignition, fuel, air, or mechanical condition affecting the identified cylinder.
- A shared engine condition that happens to be detected most clearly on that cylinder.
- A separate related fault recorded alongside the misfire code.
Safe initial checks
- Save the exact code and any related codes or snapshot data before clearing them.
- Write down whether rough running occurs at startup, idle, or during a particular kind of drive.
- Do not use a universal cylinder-location diagram or probe engine wiring; cylinder identification depends on the vehicle.
When to get professional help
- Seek prompt help for a flashing warning light, severe shaking, or unsafe loss of power.
- Use the vehicle maker’s information to identify cylinder 1 and select appropriate diagnostic checks before replacing parts.
