GENERAL OBD-II CODE GUIDE
P0171System too lean, bank 1
A fuel-and-air monitoring result that needs context from the vehicle and related codes.
WHAT IT GENERALLY REPORTS
A starting point, not a parts list.
The engine computer judged the mixture on bank 1 to be leaner than its expected range under the conditions it monitored. “Bank 1” is a vehicle-specific engine designation; the code is not a direct instruction to replace a sensor or fuel part.
Common symptoms
- The check-engine light may be the only noticeable sign.
- Some vehicles may idle unevenly, hesitate, or feel less responsive.
- Fuel use or driveability can change depending on the underlying condition.
Possible causes
- Air entering the engine in a way the control system does not account for.
- Fuel delivery or air-measurement conditions outside the expected range.
- An exhaust or sensor issue that affects the mixture information used by the computer.
Safe initial checks
- Record P0171 together with any other codes and available scan-tool snapshot data.
- With the engine off and cool, look only for an obvious loose or disconnected air duct that is already visible; do not remove covers or touch hot or moving parts.
- Note changes in idle, performance, or fuel use and when they occur.
When to get professional help
- Arrange diagnosis if the engine stalls, runs poorly, or the warning returns after being recorded.
- A technician can compare vehicle-specific sensor and fuel-system data instead of treating “lean” as proof of one failed component.
