GENERAL OBD-II CODE GUIDE

P0128

Coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature

The warm-up monitor saw a temperature result outside its expected range for that vehicle.

WHAT IT GENERALLY REPORTS

A starting point, not a parts list.

Under the conditions monitored, the engine did not reach the temperature range expected by its control system within the expected time. The code does not confirm a thermostat failure; interpretation depends on the vehicle and its operating conditions.

Common symptoms

  • The check-engine light may come on with few other changes.
  • Cabin heat or the temperature display may behave differently than usual.
  • Fuel use or engine behavior may change while the engine is not reaching its expected temperature.

Possible causes

  • A thermostat or coolant-temperature control condition.
  • Coolant level or circulation conditions that affect warm-up.
  • A temperature-sensing or wiring issue that changes the information reported to the computer.

Safe initial checks

  • Observe the dashboard temperature display and any coolant warnings during ordinary use.
  • If the engine is fully cool, look for an obvious coolant warning or visible leak without opening a pressurized system.
  • Never remove a coolant cap while the engine or cooling system is hot; stop safely if an overheating warning appears.

When to get professional help

  • Seek prompt help for overheating, a coolant warning, steam, or a visible leak.
  • A technician can compare temperature readings and warm-up behavior against the vehicle maker’s specifications.
